Pact Coffee built their reputation on freshness and the subscription model. Your beans are roasted to order and land on your doormat within days. The Original Blend is their most accessible espresso offering and serves as most people’s entry point into the Pact ecosystem.

What Is The Original?

A three-origin blend combining Brazilian, Colombian, and Ethiopian beans roasted to a medium development. It’s the kind of profile that works for a wide audience: enough sweetness and body to make a great flat white, enough character to enjoy as a straight double espresso. Nothing polarising.

The Freshness Factor

This is where Pact earns its price premium. Most supermarket coffee was roasted weeks or months before you buy it. Pact roast on demand. The coffee typically arrives 3–7 days post-roast. That freshness is tangible in the cup: better crema, more volatile aromatics, cleaner flavour.

If you’ve only ever bought pre-packaged coffee from a supermarket, the difference when you first open a Pact bag is genuinely noticeable.

Aroma

Freshly ground: milk chocolate, a hint of dark sugar, some nuttiness. The Ethiopian component adds a subtle floral note when the coffee is very fresh (first week post-roast), which fades as it rests. Either way, it smells inviting.

Pulling the Shot

At 93°C, 27–30 seconds: a well-rounded espresso with a thick crema and a milk-chocolate-forward flavour. The brown sugar sweetness is prominent, and there’s a subtle citrus brightness on the back palate (lifted by the Ethiopian) that stops it being overly one-dimensional.

It doesn’t punish you for minor extraction errors. A slight over-extraction adds a touch of bitterness that’s still pleasant; under-extracted and it’s sweet and soft. That forgiveness is useful day-to-day.

As a Milk Drink

Excellent. The milk-chocolate and sugar notes work beautifully in a flat white or latte. This is what a well-made café latte should taste like without paying café prices. Steamed oat milk in particular complements the sweetness well.

The Subscription Model

The Original is available as a one-off purchase (£8.95/250g) or via subscription (15% discount: ~£7.61). For something you’re buying every two to four weeks, that subscription saving adds up. The subscription is easy to pause or cancel from your Pact account. Not one of those nightmare subscription traps.

Grind Options

Pact will grind to your specification at no extra charge: espresso, cafetière, V60, Chemex, or AeroPress. If you don’t have a grinder, this is useful. That said, whole bean is always recommended for freshness if you have the equipment.

Value

£8.95 for 250g (£3.58/100g) is a fair price for freshly roasted specialty coffee delivered direct. It’s more expensive than supermarket options but cheaper than most specialty roasters when you account for the freshness and convenience. The subscription discount makes it better value still.

Who It’s Best For

  • People transitioning from supermarket coffee to specialty
  • Flat white and latte drinkers who want a consistent, forgiving espresso base
  • Anyone interested in trying a coffee subscription without committing to something adventurous
  • Gift buyers (Pact’s packaging is clean and professional)

Verdict

The Original earns its place as Pact’s flagship blend by being reliable, well-roasted, and genuinely better than most things in its price range. It’s not trying to be cutting-edge. It’s trying to be the best everyday espresso that arrives on your doorstep fresh, and it succeeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Pact Coffee subscription delivery work? You choose your brew method, coffee preference, and delivery frequency (weekly to monthly). Pact roast to order and dispatch within 1–2 days. Subscription orders receive a 15% discount and free UK delivery. You can skip, pause, or cancel anytime from your account dashboard.

Is Pact Coffee The Original suitable for filter brewing? Yes. Pact will grind it for your preferred method. As a filter coffee it’s pleasant, with the chocolate and sweetness coming through cleanly. However, the profile is optimised for espresso, so it’ll perform best in an espresso machine or AeroPress for espresso-style shots.

How does Pact compare to buying specialty coffee from a local roaster? Freshness is comparable (both roast to order or in small batches). Local roasters may offer more interesting single-origins or unique blends, but Pact’s convenience and consistency make it a strong option for anyone outwith reach of a specialist shop.
