At a Glance
Pact Coffee’s Seasonal Espresso is one of the better introductions to specialty coffee in the UK. At under £9 for 250g delivered fresh to your door, it’s hard to argue with the value, and the quality backs it up.
What Is the Seasonal Espresso?
Rather than a fixed recipe, Pact rotates this blend to showcase whatever single-origin coffee is tasting best that season. In practice, this usually means a Colombia or Ethiopian base, processed in a way that keeps things approachable while still showing real character.
The version I tested (roasted in early April) came from a Colombian farm in Huila, washed process, roasted to a medium development. On paper, a sensible choice for an espresso.
The Aroma
Out of the bag, there’s a pleasant sweetness: milk chocolate is the dominant note, with something almost jammy underneath. It’s an inviting smell without being overpowering.
Freshly ground at a medium-fine espresso setting, the aromatics open up nicely: stone fruit (think ripe plum rather than sharp cherry), a hint of caramel, and good depth. Nothing surprising, but consistently pleasant.
Taste: Straight Espresso
Pulled at 93°C with a 25-second shot time, the espresso is clean and well-balanced. The milk chocolate flavour holds throughout, with stone fruit in the middle and a brown sugar sweetness on the finish. Acidity is moderate, bright enough to be interesting and gentle enough not to be off-putting.
Crema is good and persistent. No bitterness to speak of, which is a minor achievement for espresso at this price point.
The shot handles fairly well across a range of parameters. It’s not the most complex coffee you’ll ever drink, but it’s forgiving and consistent, which matters when you’re dialling in on a home machine.
As a Milk Drink
This is where a lot of people will end up, and the Seasonal Espresso is genuinely well-suited to it. With steamed whole milk it becomes a balanced, comforting flat white, exactly what you want on a Baltic morning. The chocolate notes deepen, the acidity recedes, and you get a clean, sweet drink that works without being boring.
Holds up well in a latte too. No unpleasant sourness or aggressive fruitiness, just a solid, enjoyable coffee drink.
Value for Money
At £8.95 for 250g, this is competitive for freshly roasted specialty coffee in the UK. Comparable beans from independent roasters typically run £10-12. The freshness guarantee (roasted to order, shipped within days) adds genuine value.
A 1kg subscription commitment brings the price down further, worth considering if you get through coffee quickly.
Who It’s Best For
- Home espresso users who want quality without obsessing over it
- People transitioning from supermarket coffee to specialty
- Flat white and latte drinkers who want something more interesting than a commodity blend
Experienced specialty drinkers looking for unusual varietals or extreme processing styles should look elsewhere. This is deliberately accessible territory. For a more complex Pact option, see the Pact Coffee Blacksmith Blend or the Pact Coffee Original Blend.
Verdict
A reliable, well-made espresso coffee at a fair price. It’s not going to win cupping competitions, but it’s the kind of coffee you’re happy to have in the hopper every morning. The freshness delivery model makes a genuine difference to the cup.
