Union Hand-Roasted occupy an interesting position in UK coffee. They’re a genuine specialty roaster (founded in 2001, long before the UK’s current coffee wave) but also widely stocked in Waitrose and M&S, which puts them within reach of many more people than most specialty brands.

The Bright Note Filter is one of their most accessible blends and, importantly, one of the most reasonably priced entry points into Union’s range.

What Is the Bright Note Filter?

A blended coffee using Ethiopian and Guatemalan beans, roasted light, and specifically designed for filter brewing (cafetière, pour-over, filter machine). The bright in the name is doing literal work. This coffee has an obvious acidity that’s softened by the Guatemalan component.

Aroma and Grind

The beans smell clean and slightly citrusy out of the bag. Nothing dramatic, but pleasant. Ground at a medium-coarse filter setting, the aroma opens up into something more complex: lemon curd, a hint of apricot, and the faintest caramel.

In the Cup (Filter)

Brewed in a cafetière at a 1:14 ratio, the Bright Note is, as advertised, bright. The lemon character is front and centre, clean and appealing. Underneath it there’s a toffee sweetness that stops the acidity feeling raw, and a brief apricot note on the finish.

Body is light-medium. It’s a clean cup without much lingering complexity, but that’s not necessarily a flaw. For a morning coffee you want to drink in 10 minutes before leaving the house, clean and pleasant works well.

Brewed as a pour-over it’s noticeably better: more clarity, more defined fruit, better integration. Worth the extra few minutes if you have them.

The Waitrose Premium

The main knock on Union’s retail range is that you’re paying a slight premium for the convenience of buying it alongside your weekly shop, and that premium is, frankly, a bit mince when you can buy direct for the same or less.

At £9.50 for 200g (£4.75 per 100g), you’re getting reasonable value for specialty beans, but it’s not as good as buying direct or from dedicated retailers.

Who It’s Best For

  • Filter coffee drinkers looking for a reliable specialty option from supermarkets
  • People who want something lighter and brighter than their usual blend
  • Anyone who wants to explore Union’s range without committing to a direct order

Verdict

A solid, accessible filter coffee that delivers on its name. It’s not the most exciting coffee in Union’s range, but it’s consistent, well-roasted, and genuinely more interesting than anything you’ll find in the mainstream aisle. Worth keeping in rotation for weekday mornings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy Union Hand-Roasted Bright Note Filter? Widely available in Waitrose, M&S Food, and online through Amazon UK. Also available direct from Union’s website, where you’ll find a wider range and slightly better value.

Is Union Hand-Roasted Bright Note Filter suitable for espresso? It’s a filter roast, so it’ll work in an espresso machine but won’t be optimal. The light roast and filter grind will produce a very sour, under-extracted espresso. Stick to filter brewing methods.

How does Union compare to Pact Coffee or Hasbean? Union sits between supermarket coffee and pure specialty. They’re more widely available than Pact or Hasbean, which is a plus for convenience. Pure specialty enthusiasts tend to prefer the fresher, more origin-focused offerings from dedicated subscription roasters. See our Pact Coffee Original Blend and Hasbean Colombia El Paraíso Washed reviews.
